There are very few of us who can tolerate flies. I can’t stand the sight of them. Partially because I associate flies to lack of cleanliness and partially because they can irritate you. Apart from that these little creatures act as carriers of a lot of diseases. So it is best if you don’t give them access to your house.
When I say fly, I mean all the different kinds and not just the housefly. Flies fall under the class Insecta and order Diptera and there are different types of them around.
Flies and diseases:
They may be small but they are credited as carriers of different types of illnesses. The illnesses that can be spread by flies are typhoid, cholera, dysentery, food poisoning, meningitis etc.
As mentioned above, there are different species of flies, and there life span varies. But even one with the shortest life span is bad as they breed fast. They love garbage and rotten stuff. After making themselves comfortable in such an environment they come by to our homes and land on our food contaminating them.
Need I say more to convince you that these guys should not be allowed anywhere near you?

Starting the list with some things that seems like common sense, but are often overlooked. These tips should be tried out first and you will see a drastic change in the number of these winged pesky visitors.

The first thing you have to do is to clean the house and premises. By cleaning, I mean regular spring cleaning as well.
Flies aren’t fans of cleanliness.
You love to prepare delicious dishes and treats for your family but ensure that you don’t share any with flies.
Cover all the food items to avoid flies from contaminating the food items and to avoid tempting flies to visit your house.
#3. Clean scraps
Food scraps and leftovers should be cleaned promptly for the reasons mentioned above.
Dustbins are to flies what diamonds are to women. Keep the dustbins covered, especially the one in the kitchen.
If dustbins are diamonds, then drains are treasure troves for flies. If you have any open drains or sewers around the house, then ensure that you keep them covered.
#6. Compost bins
Apart from dustbins and drains, keep compost pits covered.
Composting is great way to use the waste food items. But if kept uncovered it can become a breeding ground for flies.
#7. Clear stagnant water
Stagnant water can harbor flies and mosquitoes and makes an excellent breeding spot. If you have any stagnant water around the house, make sure you clear it.
If you have pets at home then they will help to keep the fly population less. I have a dog at home, she is an excellent fly trap!
That being said, ensure that you dispose of their feces.

Pets are good but ensure that you keep their food covered. Just like we need to keep our food covered, we need to do the same for them as well.
#10. Darken the room
If you think you are the only ones who likes bright sunny rooms, you are mistaken. The flies seem to love it too. If you have flies, then close the doors and windows. Close the drapes and blinds. Once the room is dark, open one door slightly to let the flies out.
#11. Open the door in evening
You can open the door in the evening to let the winged pests out. This isn’t a smart move if you have mosquitoes.
#12. Wire mesh for windows and doors
If you hate staying in the dark, then this is an easy way to keep the flies out and the light in. If you have already done this and yet have flies, then check if there are any holes or tears and fix it.
#13. Temperature control
Flies tend to favor warm, humid environment, so use that AC if you feel there are too many flies in your room.
The points above were meant to help keep flies away. But if they don’t help, then you can use one of the remedies mentioned below.
#14. Fly swatter
If the number of flies are few, then you can use a fly swatter. You can either use a manual one or an electrical one.
#15. UV trap
If you are not handy with a fly swatter, you can trust an UV trap to do it for you. They are those small machines that keep making a zapping noise in restaurants.
#16. Hand held vacuum cleaner
You can use a small portable vacuum cleaner to catch all those flies. But remember, these flies don’t die this way. You may have to spray the bag with a bug spray and then dispose the dead flies.
#17. Vinegar cleaner
Adding some vinegar to the water you use to mop the floors will deter flies from entering your house.
#18. Vinegar trap
Take some apple cider vinegar in a bottle (Around an inch or so). An old soft drink bottle is perfect. Leave it in an area where there are flies. The flies get attracted to the smell of the vinegar and fly inside. But once in, they drown in the vinegar.
#19. Boil vinegar
If you have a huge swarm of flies that won’t leave you alone, grab some malt vinegar. This is a type of vinegar derived from barley. Boil in a pan and the smell will drive them away.
#20. Onion juice
It may smell strong but it makes a strong opponent against flies. Chop up some onions, put it in a blender and grind well without adding any water. Extract the onion juice. Spray it on the outer part of your outer doors and windows.
#21. Lavender oil
Use some lavender oil in a reed dispenser or diffuser to spread the fragrance around and get rid of flies. But be careful and follow the instructions so that you don’t overdo it. Lavender oil has a calming effect, so use it accordingly.
#22. Castor oil
Castor oil is proven to keep flies at bay. Yes the viscosity of castor oil benefits a lot here.
Lemongrass or citronella oil can be used to make a wonderful and great smelling fly repellent spray. All you have to do is to take a spray bottle with ¼ cup of water. Add 15-20 drops of lemongrass oil and mix it well. Once that is done spritz it around.
Take a few cloves, stick it on a lemon or orange and keep it around the house. It smells great but flies hate it.
A few drops of cinnamon at the entrance and windows of your home would be just the trick to keep flies away.
You would have heard this one quite a lot of times. Cucumber for flies, but how do we do it?
Eat salad, lots of it! Every time you have salad and peel those cucumbers, use it to deter flies. It keeps ants away too.
#27. Bay leaf
I love bay leaf and so do many of you. But flies hate bay leaf. So keep a few dried leaves in the kitchen to keep flies far far away.
Use a few drops of eucalyptus oil in the water you use to clean floors, counter tops etc.
Mint is also good against flies. Keep small bunches of mint in the house or grow some in your kitchen garden to get rid of flies.
You can use basil like the steps mentioned for mint. Basil is also good in repelling almost all of the creepy crawlies.
Do you like marigolds? Then plant a few plants outside the house. Flies hate it and will stay off your turf.
#32. Scented candles
Scented candles especially those with fragrances proven to ward flies off like lavender and citronella are good too!
#33. Milk trap
This is a trap that works like a charm.
Take half a litre of milk. Add quarter cup of sugar and around 4 tablespoons of black pepper powder.
Boil for 10-15 minutes. Keep this solution around the house and wait. The flies will flock to the sweet drink but the black pepper isn’t fly friendly.
Anyway, the flies will drown in the liquid.
#34. Wine trap
Remember how we discussed about using apple cider vinegar to trap mosquitoes? You can replace vinegar for wine and use it to trap flies.
#35. Dish wash soap and water spray
If you use dish wash liquid, then you can use it to kill flies too. Take equal quantities of dishwashing liquid and water. Mix it well and spray it on flies.
#36. Dish wash fly trap
Leave the above mixture, mixed with a few drops of apple cider vinegar in containers/bowls around the house.

You can use camphor to clear flies, burn some camphor and see them flee. You can also sprinkle powdered camphor in areas that flies favor.
#38. Water filled bags
Take a clear plastic bag/ziploc pouch. Fill it with water till the water level reaches the halfway or three-fourth mark. Hang it near doors and windows and the flies won’t dare to enter.
#39. Old CDs
If you don’t want to hang water bags around the house, use some old CDs instead. They work the same way. The reflection seems to put flies off and they just stay away.
#40. Clear glass jars with aluminium foil
Take a glass bottle/jar (mason jars, jam or honey) and make a filter cone using he aluminium foil. The flies would be able to pass through the cone to the bottom of the jar having honey/jam.
But they won’t be able to go out.
#41. Orange peels
Use orange peels around the house as flies seem to stay away from it. But not fruit flies though. If its fruit flies then stay away from it.
You can even infuse some orange peels in vinegar and use it as a cleaning agent.
#42. Lemon peels
Use lemon peels just like the orange peels to get rid of flies.
Add some salt to water and use this water to wipe the kitchen counter and dining table.
#44. Honey trap
Take an old honey or jam bottle fill some honey or jam in it. Cover it with clear plastic. Poke some holes on it so that flies can get in. Once they are in they won’t be able to get out!
#45. Rotten food trap
Flies are enamored by rotten food (ewwww!!!).
If you replace the honey in the above trap with a rotten piece of fruit, it will work wonders.
#46. Fly strips
Mix some corn flour in water and boil it to make it into a thick paste. Add some honey into the paste.The texture should be such that it is easy to apply.
Take some small thin cardboard/ thick paper strips and apply the paste on it. The honey and cornflour paste will act as an adhesive and will cause the flies to stick on the cardboard.
Once there are a few unwelcome visitors on it, dispose it off.
Alcohol consumption isn’t good for you. The same applies to flies too. If you are ok with the smell, spritz some on your kitchen counters, dining table and around your trash cans.
#48. Ultrasonic fly repellents
Not too frequently used, but this contraption uses ultrasonic sound waves to keep flies away. However I am not aware if it would affect pets though.
This may seem like an obvious choice, but keep it only for emergencies. Why use toxins when you can use other safe remedies.
#50. Call the exterminator
If you feel you have tried everything but still have recurrent cases of flies or other insects, seek the help of an exterminator. But if you have small kids, make sure you have an option of staying away for a few days as the fumes can be toxic.
- While using essential oils, always ensure you follow the instructions. Do not ingest and keep it out of the reach of little ones.
- Chemicals sprays, coils and machines dispensing chemical fumes should not be used in children’s rooms.
- If using any chemical traps, make sure it is out of the reach of kids.
