Is swimming good for weight loss?
Can swimming help you lose weight?
The answer is – YES!
Swimming is a good weight loss program. Don’t know swimming? Fret not, I didn’t either, in fact I was better at sinking than swimming!!
“So you are from Alleppey and your husband is in the Navy and you do not know how to swim?”. This was the comment of a certain Ms X.
Well, yes I am from Alleppey district, but I don’t live surrounded by lakes, backwaters and rivers. Ok, there is a river nearby, though my mom wouldn’t let us kids go nearby because, according to her that was not a place for a kid to learn swimming. Thanks sand miners!
As far the husband in Navy part goes, he doesn’t need to sail or swim every day. And no, there is no law mandating that a naval spouse should know swimming.
But I didn’t have the energy to explain this to her.
Her words worked me up though and I thought, “Hey why not.” Suddenly, the last swimming lesson with my husband came to mind. I had left the pool that day thinking that he had ulterior motives!! But turns out he wanted me to learn the Navy way.
Then I learnt of a swimming camp and decided to go for it!
From a hopeless student to excited swimmer:
Day one wasn’t so bad. But then after a week I thought I wasn’t making any progress.
My coach thought so too. So he took me to a diving pool and told me to jump!
I looked at him. No he wasn’t kidding.
He gave me two options.
One – to jump
Two – to be pushed
I love water, but this pool didn’t look appealing to me at all. I slowly sneaked a peek at my coach. Did I catch an evil gleam in his eye? And then I turned and whoosh!!!
Down I went…and after an eternity, or so I felt, slowly came up…And then swam across.
My coach looked at me with pride in his eyes. So he didn’t want to kill me, I thought.
He was beaming from ear to ear, saying, “See, I knew you could do it.”
Some confidence, I thought.
6 Benefits of swimming for you:
Jokes apart, swimming has been a big help. It helped me tone up, and surprisingly hiked my stamina which is a necessity for mothers with tornados at home.
So too lazy to hit a gym? Swimming is a fun way to shed those pounds.
#1. Weight loss and Muscle toning
Truth be told, I didn’t gain much weight after delivery. But I lost whatever little I gained without much effort. It also helped me tone up.
After delivery, your body takes a big hit and getting used to a new routine can also take a toll on you. But swimming helps you exercise without stressing your already tired body.
#2. Fun Cardio session
This is the most fun cardio session. Or any workout session. I am not a big fan of anything associated with heat so leaving the gym all sweaty somehow doesn’t quite appeal to me, but boy wasn’t this fun?
Fun workout and you leave feeling fresh.
#3. Enhances Stamina
Ever since I have started my tryst with the pool, I have realized that my stamina has increased considerably. And as a mom to 20 month old, whose energy levels are often off the charts, that’s a good thing.
#4. Improves breathing
My Achilles heel- Dust.
Along with that came allergic rhinitis, which meant that, my nose was more like a showpiece. But thanks to swimming things are not so bad. Although now I don’t get much time to breathe.
#5. Strengthens the bones
When I went to my doctor with a back pain, I was advised to continue swimming, as it helps in strengthening your bones as well.
#6. Calming effect
I have grown to cherish and love the time at the pool. It has a calming effect on me, which is due to the release of those feel good chemicals (endorphins).
